Allegiance and why: Eleri has no real thoughts on the politics of the English and French, only that she knows if there’s a war on then they’re going to call up good honest Welsh boy’s to go fight in it, but do they recognise her country on the flag? Do they heck!
Social Status and/or Occupation: A courtesan at Isabel’s house.
Brief physical description of your character: Eleri is a petite woman although she still has the frame of the farm girl she once was, although a few years in London without a fixed income has done a lot to lose the muscle she once had. Her hair is blonde and long though she normally wears it up as she thinks it flatters her face more. She loves the colour green associating it with vibrancy and life.
Brief description of your characters history, including family: Eleri was born in the Welsh valleys in a small village that’s main export was wool which was sent to London to make into fine clothing and blankets and everyday essentials like that. The sixth child of a large farming family she spent most of her days helping her mother to run their household, making butter and preserves and then going out to help her father tend their animals but she was not content in the farm, nor did she see the possibility of marriage in their little village and life as a farmers wife as a very appealing prospect.
Age seventeen she packed up and went with the wool to London where she took the first job she could selling fruits during intermission at the Opera houses and theatres. It was there she first became aware of the beautiful courtesans of London – elegant and very much in design of their own lives. Eleri also saw though the bad side of that world, the street prostitutes with their pimps and poor clients, broken women trying to survive and promised herself she would never fall to that.
She fell in with a man who worked at the theatre as a stage hand and lived with him for a little while. Their relationship was tempestuous at best, there was very little money but they were happy. Eleri’s family was not. When one of her brother’s came down with the wool for sale and found her living, unmarried, with a man the family disowned her as a harlot. Soon after Eleri left her young man, the whole experience having soured her on him as she realised her prospects of marriage with him were slim. She was not one of the new breed of revolutionised liberal springing up who openly lived together and spurred marriage as an outdated tradition and she had fallen out of love with him.
Leaving though ment she had no where to stay and without a job she faced the prospect she had already sworn herself from. Deciding she must do something Eleri took herself to Isabel’s House, an establishment she’d always heard talked of in high esteem and introduced herself to the proprietor Constance Mosley asking for a job.
Eleri has been working there now for little under a year and enjoys her work. She likes the ability to choose her clients on her own terms and the social mobility it’s given her. She’d never have thought a girl from the valleys could have been to the parties she has, nor with the men who’ve taken her there. Unbeknownst to Eleri though she’s two months pregnant which is sure to throw a spanner into the works of her enjoyable life-style.
One or two plots which you would like to play out in the community: Eleri’s pregnancy and the complications with that.
